Acute vs. Subacute

Many people, including some healthcare providers, are unsure of the often subtle differences between acute and subacute care. This can be important for patients and family members, and referring physicians, when deciding on a plan of care following hospitalization. Here is a comparison between the two:

Acute

  • Physiatrist on site
  • Three hours of daily therapy
  • Approximately 6-to-1 nurse-to-patient ratio
  • Average 10-14 day stay

Subacute

  • Doctors are available on a limited basis
  • One hour of daily therapy
  • Often as high as 20-to-1 nurse to patient ratio
  • Average three week stay
