Jersey City Medical Center's Liberty Eyecare Center Enhances the Visual Needs of Patients of all Ages

Liberty Eyecare Center, which functions as Jersey City Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology, serves the needs of both premature newborns in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit and seniors whose vision has been impaired by such progressive diseases as cataracts and glaucoma.

Located at 115 Columbus Drive in Jersey City, the Center serves over 6,500 patients annually. In addition to a staff that includes general ophthalmologists and specialists in pediatric, retinal and corneal ophthalmology, and oculoplastics, the Center participates in a residency program with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). It is the only ophthalmology residency training program in the state of New Jersey.

“Our care to the community includes a full range of services, including surgical intervention of cataracts, outpatient pterygium surgery (the removal of abnormal tissue that can grow to cover the cornea), and laser treatment for diabetics and glaucoma patients, in addition to day-to-day care for all ophthalmic conditions,” said Dr. Barry Maltzman, Director of the Department of Opthalmology at Jersey City Medical Center. “All of our staff members hold faculty appointments at UMDNJ.”

More specifically, Liberty Eyecare includes specialists trained in:

  • Care for premature infants, including retinopathy of prematurity examinations for newborns in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit;
  • Pediatric services that includes evaluations and surgery for strabismus (“crossed eyes”) and cataracts;
  • Specialty care for diabetes, a disease that is rampant in urban centers like Jersey city, that includes diagnosis and laser treatment;
  • Plastic surgery of the face and eyelids for patients that include those who have suffered trauma;
  • Corneal transplants

A full range of insurance programs are accepted. For more information on the Liberty Eyecare Center or to make an appointment, call (201) 946-6889.
